What Is Preventative Pest Control?
Whenever a discussion focuses on the control and eradication of pest infestations, we are oftentimes reminded of the age-old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Granted, Benjamin Franklin was probably not thinking about controlling household pests when he coined the phrase. However it still applies here in that preventing this problem from occurring in the first place will save you a great deal of effort, time, and most importantly, money. So it follows that preventative pest control can go a long way to preventing any problems in the future.
The first step to controlling pests indoors is an effective outdoor preventative pest management system. In other words, if you want to prevent them from entering your home, intercept them outdoors before they are able to come indoors. The Eastern seaboard is a prime destination for termites and other pests with infestations being a common occurrence throughout Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Howard Counties. This is attributed to certain ecological factors which include:
- Food – adult and younger invading pests typically feed on bacteria, fungi, and decaying organic matter found in high moisture areas. This is the first area that we typically check for infestations before entering a home to inspect it.
- Humidity and moisture – with the possible exceptions of ants, centipedes, ground beetles, moths, and spiders, most pests must replenish the water that they lose through their exoskeletons. Mulched plant beds and shrubbery surrounding buildings or under decks and porches as well as dense ground covers or other areas containing high moisture levels are conducive to infestations. Many predators also get moisture from the victims they feed on.
- Periods of high activity – since the humidity is typically higher overnight, this is usually when pests are the most active. This helps them to counteract the moisture loss they incur throughout the day.
- Reservoir sites – these areas contain high levels of moisture and organic matter so they function as excellent pest breeding areas and habitats. These areas are ideal for their survival and proliferation. Once environmental conditions are too dry or too wet, or when the habitat becomes overpopulated, they will search for buildings to enter and survive.
