Mosquitos And The Threat Of Disease
There are literally thousands of species of mosquitos that inhabit our planet. However, even though there are only about 150 of them here in the US, Maryland sees their fair share of them, especially in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Howard Counties. Although these pests feed on some nectar, animal and human blood is their primary source of nutrition, especially during the egg-laying stage. For the most part, mosquitos are relatively dormant during the daytime while their most common feeding times are around dawn and dusk.
Characteristics And Issues
Interestingly enough, it is only the female mosquito that feeds on animal and human blood which aids in the reproductive process. The male does not feed on blood as it lacks the mouthparts that enable the female to pierce the skin. Once she has pierced the skin, the female injects saliva into the wound in order to prevent clotting while she is ingesting the blood from your body. When she lays her eggs, she prefers areas that hold water such as bird baths, ornamental ponds, and rain collection barrels or gutters.
Mosquitos and disease go hand in hand, which is why they are such a health concern as well as a nuisance that is difficult to completely eradicate. They are extremely hardy and have been known to spread a wide range of diseases including Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Heartworms and West Nile Virus in cats and dogs. The different human diseases spread by mosquitos include:
- California Encephalitis
- Dengue Fever
- Eastern equine Encephalitis (EEE)
- Jungle or Yellow Fever
- Rift Valley Virus
- St. Louis Encephalitis
- West Nile Virus
Although some of these do not present any health concerns in North America, mosquitos and disease pose worldwide health threats.
Why Are We Plagued By Mosquitos?
Mosquitos thrive in humid climates and geographical areas that are prone to large amounts of rainfall and moisture. Basically, mosquitos will breed and become a nuisance anywhere there is standing water accompanied by warm temperatures. We have found this to be the case in numerous cities throughout the three counties mentioned above such as Annapolis, Arnold, Baltimore, Bowie, Catonsville, Columbia, Glen Burnie, Pasadena, and Severna Park.
One thing is certain. Mosquitos can become very problematic and deter you from going outside and enjoying your outdoor living space during the warmer months of the year. Not to mention the fact that they pose a serious health risk in certain areas of the US as well as here in Maryland. With this in mind, the best way to combat this issue while protecting you, your family, and your pet’s health in the process is to implement a mosquito control program.
For the last 26 years, BUGOUT Termite and Pest Control, Inc. has been serving the cities and counties mentioned above by providing customized mosquito control programs. We know how frustrating this problem can be. However, it is not a pest problem you should try to handle as a DIY project or with over-the-counter products. You need a more permanent solution.
