4 Common Maryland Yard Pests

Maryland Exterminator - 4 Common Maryland Yard PestsWhile it’s never good to find a pest infestation inside your home, certain insects and mammals can create problems for your yard without ever crossing into your home. These pests can damage your grass, harm trees, dig up your garden, and even cause water damage to your property. This list isn’t comprehensive, but it does include some of the most common reasons to call a Maryland exterminator.

1. Cicadas

In the eastern United States there are two common cicada species. One has a life cycle of around two to five years and lays eggs every year, and the other has a 15-year life cycle and appears in large waves. Nymphs and adults don’t cause any lawn damage aside from a few holes that help aerate your soil, but the females lay eggs in tree twigs and can kill whole branches. This causes unsightly damage and can require regular pruning.

2. Chinch Bugs

Chinch bugs feed on the sap of grass plants. They can be very hard to spot, but you can tell where they’ve been by the growing patches of dead, brown grass. Even if you manage to deal with the chinch bugs, the grass won’t grow back and the dead patches will require reseeding if you want a healthy lawn again.

3. Termites

Termites can cause significant property damage if they reach your home, but they can also infest your yard without going inside. Wood left outside appeals to termites since rain soaks it with the moisture they need to survive, and so termites will go after wood piles, fallen trees in a nearby wooded area, tree stumps left over from city work, bush stumps created by landscaping work, and so on. Termites that thrive on your property may move on to your house or garage, so remove their food sources before they get a foothold.

4. Voles

Voles are small burrowing mammals that eat plant roots and can damage lawns, gardens, and orchards. Aside from eating root vegetables, vole tunnels dry out roots and endanger plants, and if they dig under a concrete foundation it can direct rainwater to wear it down from underneath. No matter what kind of property you own, voles are always pests.
